Just trying to understand this part of the programme. But the references you have referted to look likr family matches, to my grandmother Mary Ellen Craig who married Samuel Stuart, and lived at Carneal, Raloo, Larne. (just outside of Glenoe village

Millsie Report 18 Aug 2013 16:10

Hello. I have read your posts regarding Samuel Craig, son of Ephraim Craig (1802-1883), farming at Newlands Glen near Magheramorne, Glynn Parish, Antrim. I believe my Martha Craig (bc1808-1888) is a sister to Ephraim.

In 1863 the Valuation Revision Books for Carneal, Raloo Parish show:
David and William Craig farming #16 and 17 jointly);
Robert and William Craig are farming #15Aa and 15Bb; Ephraim Craig farming 15C, 16;
David and William Craig farming #16, 17; David has two more properties #18,20 (in 1867);
John Craig #28a;
Samuel Craig #29, went to William Craig in 1867 and Mary Craig in 1907;
Francis Craig #30 who had the land at least from 1863-1882(died).
I just finished transcribing all these land records from Carneal, Raloo and I believe some of these Craigs are related to our Craigs in Newlands.

I have a record of all the tombstones for the Craigs in the Old Raloo Cemetery. There are only three that I know of in the Glynn Cemetery. Ephraim Craig of Newlands' is buried in Raloo (not Glynn). When Ephraim Sr. died in 1883 Samuel, his son took over the farm, per his will. (57 acres, 30 perches). Also the will states that three graves in Raloo Cemetery are given to son Samuel. The executors of the will are Ephraim Sr.'s brother William Craig and his son Samuel.

The two oldest graves in the Old Raloo Cemetery (which also have the Craig heraldry on the stone) for Craig are:

Robert (1696-1739 and wife Elizabeth McDowal (1770-1788); and Francis Craig (1701-1771) and his wife Sarah ?? (1702-1772.)

Next is Ephraim Craig (1735-1817) and his wife Jannet ?? (1738-1816) also with the Craig heraldry.

David Craig (1810-1884) and his wife Mary ?? (1811-1851) [without heraldry] , tombstone was erected by son, William John Craig. (1844-1920);

The next one is Ephraim Craig (1802-1883) of Black Hill, Magneramorne (Newlands) and his wife Margaret ?? (1806-1881. Two grandchildren buried here along with his son Samuel (1836-1899) and his wife Ellen [nee English], (1834-1916).

James Craig (1824-1899) and wife Jane ?? (1837-1895) and some without dates (Robert and Janet Craig, etc.)

In 1861, there were six Craig's farming in Glynn Parish: Alexander and Hugh in Ballylig; Ephraim Sr. and Jr. in Newlands; Hugh and Isabella in Drumnadreagh and John in Ballyedward.

It is possible, due to the fact these people are buried in the same graveyard that Robert and Elizabeth Craig are the parents of Ephraim Craig (m Jannett). I cannot find the son of Ephraim and Jannet who would be the 'father' of Ephraim and Margaret Craig of Newlands. I wonder if you have any ideas here.

You may already have this information above, but if you would hard copies of anything mentioned above, just send me your email address and I will forward on.

I haven't found any related Craigs to our family and you are the first that seems a possibility, so I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards, Pat

Marlene

Hello!
I believe the Samuel Craig in your post may have been my great-grandfather. The dates seem right. Samuel's son, Francis, was my grandfather (whom I never knew...long story. My father died in a car accident just before I was born).
We've been able to trace our family back to Ephraim Craig, Sr. (1802-1883) who was married to Margaret Aicken (1806-1881). That's where I'm hitting a dead end...

I'm very interested to find any information on my ancestors, or any living relatives I may have on the other side of the pond! (I'm in the US).
Thanks very much! Marlene <3
