Hi Polly, yes that william is samuels son, my g g grandfather. hi ann, the ones you posted are not my relations sorry. i am tryin gto find if samuels father was maybe from gypsies. i went to stockton last weekend and met up with my grandmothers siblings on the lee side and they all said that they had heard the same story from their parents but could find no record or reference to them being from gypsies. my grandmother was jane ann lee, her dad was john lee, his dad was william lee and his dad was samuel lee and thats as far back as i can get. thankyou to all who have posted i do appreciate it big time xx |

Hello, just as a matter of interest, in the 19th century, tinkers weren't gypsies. They were men who had been apprenticed and trained in working with tin. They travelled around repairing small household items, usually those made of tin. It's only later that tinker came to mean gypsy. |

hello, im trying to find out if what we have been told is true, we have always been told that the lee's were gypsies. the earliest record i can find of my lee family is the 1841 census where samuel lee was born in about 1810 from open gate shropshire. he then went onto marry in dudley worcestershire and had my g g grandfather william who was born in brockmore staffs in 1835 he then had my g grandfather john in 1874 born in stockton on tees, there the family stayed. samuel married a lady called eliza armstronng. can anyone trace him back further for me please or tell me what i need to do to find out where his family came from. thanking you in anticipation, helen x |
