I was a bit worried about the occupations above but 1901 shows that they dealt in 'Vegetables' so I believe it is the correct family:

Hello Dea
I wish it was correct but it cannot as my Mum was born in 1919 and is one of 4 children. The youngest child,William Owen was born in 1929.
|
Is the birth that I posted for your Mother correct?
Birth end of 1919, registered in 1920:
Births Mar 1920 Owen Mary Owen Barton I. 8c 1360
|
Is this William's birth?
Births Mar 1929 Owen William Owen Barton I. 8c 809
or this: Births Dec 1929 Owen William N Marshall Barton I. 8c 686
Added: What are the names of the other children?
|

All the other info has been worked back from there - I am sure that it is correct.

Hi again
Yes-sorry that is correct. Mum was born 26th December and William was 29th December and Margaret was in August I think. Maybe the fourth child did not live as long as I had been told-aged 4 when he died (James Owen died of meningitis)? Thanks for that. What is Barton? Is it a place? I cannot understand the main information you sent about the man,James marrying and having one son. Is that my grandfather?
|
Are you thinking that my Grandfather was infact called William Owen? That would fit with his age and I don't ever recall Mum mentioning any aunts or uncles on his side. Oh my. That might explain some things.
|
Hi Alex,
The births posted are from FREEBMD (which you can search for FREE) and give for eg
Owen Mary Owen Barton I. 8c 1360 surname/given name/mothers maiden name/registration district/GRO reference
Barton I is Barton on Irwell registration district (ie Greater Manchester/Lancashire) So in this case Mary was born Owen, and her mother's maiden name was also Owen.
|
Have you applied for your Mother's birth certificate? Might be very useful.
This could be the meningitis birth and death at a younger age than 4 Births Dec 1922 Owen James B Owen Barton I. 8c 926 Deaths Jun 1924 Owen James B 1 Barton I. 8c 709
|
Patchem - I think you have the correct James there - I found it last night and have been working on one of my 'theories' !!!
Deaths: James Owen abt 1862 Apr-May-Jun 1927 Barton upon Irwell Lancashire James Owen abt 1862 Apr-May-Jun 1937 Barton Lancashire
Lancs BMD shown the middle name to be Boardman!
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1922 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
OWEN James Boardman Stretford Trafford STR/102/61
Now, armed with that middle name, I found this marriage:
Marriages Mar 1894 (>99%) Boardman Elizabeth Ann Chorlton 8c 1085 Owen James Chorlton 8c 1085
This, of course, means that William was born before they married and when you look at the 1901 census he has he middle initial 'B' Could this be for 'Boardman, meaning he was born a Boardman but took on the name Owen after they married?

This is the boardman family in 1891 and 1881 which shows that all Elizabeth's details fit !

Oh Dea-you are solo GOOD at this!! You have just supplied me with a load of presents that i am opening and TRYING to digest. When you found "Boardman" I got hold of an address card-one of the few things i have from my Mum (just to give you a bigger picture-William,my uncle, had all family history in his home and left it to the opportunistic cleaner 1 week before he died). The address card is of "Miss M Boardman, Address: "Nythfa", Mountain Lane, Penmaenmawr,North Wales. We visited a cottage here when i was a kid. I presume it was her home and she left it to Mum's mum. I always remember Mum talking about "Aunt Maud" and "Aunt Sally (not Sarah though). Also Mum had an autograph book that she got friends and relatives to sign. There is an uncle Nathan in there-his address is in Canada.
This is really exciting. Thank you so much. I need to understand this-is this correct: My Grandfather was James and born to Elizabeth Owen (ne Boardman) when she met my great Grandfather??? She already had a son-William? I still am confused ! I have ordered Mum's birth certificate.

This is exciting for me too - Have to go to bed now as I am an 'old lady' !
Send me all the info you have - it looks like we have 'lift off' on this :-D :-D
Will be back here in the morning !

I think that James and Elizabeth were your great grandparents - William was your grandfather ! - Born as Boardman, later Owen !!

Why is the name of the father wrong on the marriage certificate? Just wondering. Everything else looks good.
