(just to add, as 1871 states she was 6 mths, gives Whitechapel for place, not seeing!)
(The date of the 1871 census was the night of 2 April 1871)

Thank you that would make sense. Louisa and henry had a daughter also louisa born in 1871 and possibly a son william born in 1866 but i can't find these 2 on the 1881 census, so could they possibly have died from TB as well. I can only find louisa and her son henry on the 1881 census living together in St George in the east, but i can't find the older children,John born 1865 and Charles born 1867 either

I know it's got a p, but could it be phthisis? It was a huge killer at this time in east London, and elsewhere. Another name for tuberculosis.

Hi I know this will sound really vague but having just seen a death certificate I can't read the cause of death, I don't know if anyone can interpret it or has any ideas. The person is Henry Brown, died October 1871 aged 33 in St George in the East he was a hairdresser married to Louisa Richens. The cause of death is a word that doesn't have any letters that go under the line i.e. g, p, q etc and possibly ends ........isis and he had it for 1 year. I would be grateful for any suggestions thanks

you might be interested in exploring the new GRO Index ........... GRO = General Registry Office.
They have digitised their birth and death records from 1837 to 1915, and the birth records show the full name of the child and usually the mother's maiden name. It will also be possible to order an email version of a certificate for the next few weeks/days (there is a limit on the number they will issue this way).
eg
BROWN, HENRY RICHES GRO Reference: 1863 J Quarter in WHITECHAPEL Volume 01C Page 413
BROWN, JOHN BENJAMIN RICHES GRO Reference: 1864 D Quarter in WHITECHAPEL Volume 01C Page 383
BROWN, WILLIAM RICHES GRO Reference: 1866 S Quarter in WHITECHAPEL Volume 01C Page 360
Of course there is nothing to say that they decided not to continue to call John Benjamin, but decided at baptism to change his second name to Stephen!
NOTE:- there is another Brown mmn Riches family, but those children are registered in Peterborough.
You should try searching on this site if you have not already done so. You do have to register, but it is free .............

Hello Thank you for the above. I have tried to pick up the threads of this part of my family, but am not succeeding. I can't find out what happened to Louisa Riches husband henry Brown. On the 1881 census I have her as a widow living with her son Henry in St George in the East, if that is the right Louisa Brown So what happened to her husband other younger children, Louisa born 1871, William born1881. I know John Stephen lived but can't find him on the census either after 1871, until he reappears in 1911 with his wife Isabella. Thanks

I've found Louisa living with Henry Jnr and his wife Ada and family in 1901. She is s widow. I can't find John at all and only Charles (I think) in1881 and 1891. I'll keep on trying.

Sorry it wasn't being a silversmith so much as the area of London and it was one of those family myths that I haven't been able to prove or disprove and Brown doesn't sound Jewish to me but I didn't have that much information to go on.

what makes you think being a silversmith had a Jewish connection?

Thank you all. I have spoken to my dad who seems to recall the there being 2 sisters who married 2 brothers which would tie in with Isabella and Louisa Hill marrying John and Charles Brown, it is interesting to see that Charles was a silversmith, would the area that they live in and their professions suggest that they might have some Jewish history?

As you say Brown is a difficult name to work with. I can't seem to pin down any of the family from the 1871 census I posted in the later census.
If Charles is Charles Edwin as AnnCardiff suggested then I have found a record for a Charles Edwin Brown in the 1911 census (strangely enough with a wife also called Louisa) but he is a silversmith's agent:-

I can't be sure this one is yours though.

Thank you so much it all seems to fit. I was hoping that with a name like Louisa Riches it would help put the pieces together. So now I have a 2x grt grandfather with brothers and possibly a sister. I don't think he became a hairdresser like his father but would any of his brothers and do we know what happened to them?
