It's not uncommon for a "made up" name for a father to be recorded on a marriage registration for the sake of appearances.
Could Samuel have been a brother's name or her grandfather?
Have you looked for a possible marriage for her mother?

It looks as though 51 Lisburn Road was the address for Belfast City Hospital- so probably not much help.
Edit- that was in 1955- earlier, looking at reports in the paper it was the workhouse.

Hi everyone, Quick update, my mother in law decided not to visit her half brother in the end. I simply sent a letter saying we wouldn't contact them again and that my MIL wishes them all the best for the future. Quite sad as I still believe they think it's a scam but nothing more we can do. Im concentrating on the Irish side as you know and my original question was how to find the birth of my MIL's mother - Marina Margaret McKinney. I have found it, but it's not what I was expecting.... Marina's marriage certificate stated her father was Samuel McKinney (a farmer). Her birth certificate states she was born at 51 Lisburn Road, Belfast and her mother was Maggie McKinney (a servant) who was unmarried with no fathers name. All I can think of is Marina was brought up by another family member - maybe an uncle. Does anyone know what the law is in regards to putting a fathers name down on a marriage cert back in 1959? Would it 100% have to be the biological fathers name or nothing? I'm quite stuck on where to go next because apparently Marina was one of many children! Any thoughts? Kind Regards Harriet

Perhaps if MIL wrote more interest maybe taken,?
I wonder if a Swindon Newspaper from 2002 would throw any light on an Obit.?
AG,
Most of the Samuel McKinneys are farmers in 1911 census, :-D.

Kay posted the marriage of Samuel Moore McKinney -
in case it turns out to be relevant (not that the names give any eureka moment) he married one of these women:
Isobel Barry Alice McCormick Allison Muir McArthur Jane Leeman
I don't see any children of any of them - at least as far as Ancestry's concerned.

Hi, Thanks for the advice :) when I called the post office I never expected someone to put him on the phone. I did apologise over the phone and didn't go into any detail because I knew it was inappropriate. He said he'd call me but didn't. I wondered whether he still thought it was a scam so I did get a 3rd party to contact him via letter with documentation of proof but no response. I have thought long and hard about going to see him. My MIL knows he most probably wants nothing to do with this. I have his home address and he's not married nor has children. I think my MIL would rather have a 'get lost' rather than silence at this stage in her life. Also, if there's any chance that he could give me any info on the Irish side it would be a breakthrough. After that I will never contact him again. Our hopes are finding her full brother. The Kenny birth looks interesting. I have thought about whether Marina was adopted herself, I'll have a look at anyone born on that date

Harriet,
as a caution.
Its is little wonder that he declined a cold call out the blue on such a delicate matter where his mother is at the centre, and also to his work place ,,,,,,,,,,perhaps prior to your next visit you could send him copies of paperwork for him to read over and a letter to explain and apologise for your previous contact. Perhaps when he and his sibling have had time to digest it all he may agree to see you,but to cold call him or go to his place of works is not going to get your MIL the best outcome.......
I hope it all goes well.

Margaret M Kenny Event Type Birth Event Date Jan - Mar 1935 Event Place Cahersiveen, Ireland Registration Quarter and Year Jan - Mar 1935 Registration District Cahersiveen
I havnt included the mothers maiden name because it could be the wrong birth,,,,,,,,a Dec birth can appear in the next years first quarter...
Edit,,, because a birth cant be found in her known full name/s the lady herself could have been adopted into the Mc/Mac -Kinney family.?

Don’t worry about the 1923 record – someone posted a birth reg for that year then later deleted it. At some point we’ve all done the same.
Good luck with trying to meet the brother – it might be best to pave the way and at least send him a copy of your (edit your mother in laws) own BC to prove that (they) have the same mother. It would be even better if an ‘official’ 3rd party could liaise between you.

Hi everyone, Wow thanks for all of your responses! Thanks AnnCardiff for the marriage record. That is indeed something I have. I found it a while ago and that's how I found her two children and made contact with them. Detective - I did join the groni website but still can't find anything really. I may try again and see if I can navigate around it better. If I could just find out what marinas mother was called, maybe then I could find Marinas siblings because I know she had many. Her marriage to Bogdaniec was down as Margaret M so she could have been born as that. Detective, what did you mean by 1923 record? Gin, thank you for reminding me!! I ordered marinas marriage and death certs but completely forgot about the will. I will order that tonight. Originally I couldn't find an address for the half siblings, although I knew the area they were in. I ended up calling the local post office and asking if they had heard of the half brother and they said yes he's the postmaster! Nearly fell off my chair?! I spoke to him and he sounded really nice, I'd sent a letter to the half sister previously so he knew who I was. He said they thought it was a scam and said he'd call me back but never did. I am travelling down there on 28th June to see if he will speak to me and potentially give me some info on Marinas parents/siblings.

Just what I was wondering - was about to ask AnnC where she found the info, as I can't see any sign of a birth for Marina, based on what Harriet says. (Though I haven't looked on specifically Irish sites.)
[ EDIT: I assumed AnnC meant the grandparents' marriage, which is what Harriet is hoping to find, but I think she's probably sent Marina's own marriage record.]
Marina's marriage cert gives her name as Margaret M, rather than Marina M. - if that's any sort of clue - though it still doesn't bring up a birth, as far as I can see.

N Ireland BC are held by Groni
https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/
The 'Free' Search doesn't give any birth results even with only the surname. It might just be to protect the privacy of the living rather than anything else. Register for the site and see if anything comes up. Hopefully someone with experience can help you negotiate the site. .. AnnC - are you sure you haven't given Harriet details she already knows? Her post indicates that she has been in contact with Marina's other children. Mind you, her UK MC would name her father, if she knew it.

Hi everyone, I'm desperate for some help in finding the birth certificate for a lady called Marina Margaret McKinney. This is my story; I found after getting to know my mother in law that she has never met a blood relative. She was placed in care from birth in Swindon in 1956. Her mother was a lady called Marina Margaret McKinney who was born 10/12/1934 in Belfast and father was an American in the USAF based in RAF Fairford (there's not much hope finding him). I have two addresses where Marina lived in Swindon between 1956-1958. Marina got married in 1959 to a polish man and had two children soon after. When my mother in law was 10, she was told her mother and family were emigrating to Canada. As she hadn't been adopted, her mother was required to provide a forwarding address and keep in contact. This didn't happen and they cut all contact. My mother in laws teacher wanted to adopt her but of course this couldn't happen without the mothers signature. My mother in law is 60 now and all she knew is that her family were in Canada somewhere. I decided to do my own search and was dumbfounded when I found that Marina did not move to Canada and simply moved down the road in Swindon. Sadly, I found that Marina died in 2002 but I have been in contact with the two half siblings who simply don't believe this is true and don't want contact. Furthermore, I found from my mother in laws care notes that she has a full brother out there somewhere! He was born 10/01/1958 in Swindon and adopted at birth. I found his birth record and I'm currently paying an adoption worker to find him but it seems they can't locate him which is heartbreaking - they know his new name and he is currently registered with a GP in the UK - it's all very frustrating. So now, my last hope is to find some cousins. From the care notes, Marina had quite a few siblings and her fathers name was Samuel McKinney and he was a farmer. The help I need is to find a birth certificate for Marina. I could then hopefully find the marriage of the grandparents and then possibly birth records of siblings. Sorry for the lengthy post, this all means so much to me. If anyone has any advice on finding Irish bmd records, i'd be so grateful. Many Thanks Harriet
