You have all found out SO MUCH about my ancestor and thank you very much.
It is David Law junior's younger brother JOHN LAW [known as 'Jack'] who is my direct ancestor and we have portraits of him and other information. So David Law senior is their father.
We've been tied up with family all day until just now and we're away very early in the morning. So I won't be able to get back to this for c.two weeks :-(.
I haven't been able to access those links to 'the accident' but can't wait to tackle this on our return.
PS: the Chetham's Register gives his dod as December 1854, which is almost certainly a year later than the actuality, see your search above for his death in Manchester in 1853 which is where I would expect it to be.
Big thank you again. I'LL BE BACK. :-D

hmmmmmmm
the report of the accident in the Liverpool Mail 29 March 1851, said that
"...... he was as fine a specimen of an old English gentleman as could be seen, which might be attributed to the fact, that although for many years he had kept a public-house, he had always abstained from the use of intoxicating liquors; he was always a man of literary habits."
The Bolton Chronicle paper said he was "nearly 75 years of age" at the time; the Liverpool Mail called him "a gentleman about 70 years of age".
There are reports in at least 9 newspapers.

David was horrifically injured in 1851 - there is an article in the Preston Chronical but it is far to long to type out.
If you have access to FMP it can be found here:
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/bna/viewarticle?id=bl%2f0000099%2f18510329%2f005####### Preston Chronicle 29 March 1851
security. The action went by default, and a verdict was given to the amount claimed. ACCIDENT FaOM NAPrHA.-The plaintiff, Mr. David Law, resided at Manchester, and the defendant, Mr. Harry lawson (of the firm of Johnson and Rawson, stationers), was a director 29 March 1851 - Preston Chronicle - Preston, Lancashire, England
No doubt why he 'engaged in no business for many years before his death'...

http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/data/neisearch.php Only lists a David Law, Master Mariner with a Probate in 1799. Further reading about the collection https://www.dur.ac.uk/library/asc/collection_information/cldload/?collno=49
The Wills and Probate site only starts from 1858 although there is always a possibility that Probate wasn't granted until then. https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
Are you sure that he actually left a Will, or are you assuming? Contact Newcastle Archive to see if they can suggest where you could look https://twarchives.org.uk/ ...........
If David Law was living in Manchester at the time of his death, then try http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/448/archives_and_local_history/462/family_history/8

I googled
David Law entered the school in January 1789, son of David Law, innkeeper, Manchester.
Land surveyor, then brewer, but "engaged in no business for many years before his death".
He died 20th December 1854
????? Maybe the death registration I posted above is NOT him????
I've entered this because his death occurred before the Probate Clendar began ......
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966
you might have to search through ......
UK, Extracted Probate Records, 1269-1975
Abstracts of probate acts in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury

Now that's VERY interesting. It would seem that he didn't die in Manchester at all. Hmmmmmmmmm, what was he doing in NuT??
I'll try to find time to poke around a bit more for this one before my hols tomorrow.
Assuming it is him, how do I go about finding his Will/Probate records, please? I only have ancestry and this date is too early for their records.
Either way, I will order his DC and try to glean more info from that. :-S
