Thank you so much Shirley, Austin Q, mgnv and especially SylviainCanada yet again, for all your help. I did not realize that other family members went to Canada and some traveled between there and the UK regularly! I can now ad much more to the history of this family. Again, thank you all very much.
Terence.

Thanks Sylvia
I mentioned the USA entry as our Gran went for a six month visit to relations in Toronto in 1948 and she went out on the Queen Elizabeth and came home on the Queen Mary
In both cases she travelled New York /Southampton
Her outward border crossing records says in transit .
I thought at that time that was the usual way to get to Canada.

Shirley ..............
you didn't have to go to the US to get to Canada.
Entry points for Canada were either Halifax or Montreal, and ships sailed from most of the ports in England and Europe.

I presume rego'ing a BMD is a state responsibility in Oz. Well, in Canada, it's provincial and each province has its own rules abt the privacy of these records. In Ont, B/M/Ds are closed for 97/82/70 y - well, technically deaths are not closed, but there's no index available to the public for 70y.
I know it's not related to the later history, but LAC is currently digitizing CEF soldiers' service records and is almost 50% done (done A-Ka). With his service record, you can see what unit(s) he was with, and using the unit war diaries, see what that unit was doing on a dat by day basis.

There's also an online history of the CEF at: http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-dhp/his/docs/CEF_e.pdf Author: Nicholson, G.W.L Official History of the Canadian Army in the First World War: Candian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919

Re my thread 22 Jan 2013: Frederick Samual b14/12/1888, and Mary Kate Ethel Barrett (Meads) b15/4/1888, both born in the UK, but married in Ontario, Canada on 4/7/1912. Frederick served as a Canadian Soldier in WW I, giving his residence as Bowmanville, 65Km ENE of Toronto. They arrived back in the UK with 3 children at Southampton on the "Empress of Britain" on 6th October 1932 and visited Frederick's parents in West Ealing, Middlesex. Did they stay in the UK or go back to Canada or elsewhere?
After searching many shipping lists and BMD's in both countries I cannot find any more information regarding their later movements!
Perhaps SylviaInCanada (my very much appreciated help in the past) or others, can find the answers to my frustrating searches.
Terence in South Australia.
