Hello there,

I am looking for information on Annie Hughes - the only record I have is from the 1911 census where she is visiting an address in Aberdare, South Wales with George Henry Messer and her son Cyril Hughes aged 2.

According to the census she was born in "Willington, Shropshire" in 1888 but I can't find any more records of her.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Yes ArgyllGran, that's the 1911 census record I'm referring to.

Cyril is my grandfather - It has always been assumed in the family that Henry George was Cyril's father - but this was never confirmed.

Cyril was born in Bath Union Workhouse but I've been unable to find a record of Annie entering the workhouse - where she was before her visit to Aberdare or indeed where she went afterwards!

It's very much a family mystery!

Just maybe, if she was Eliza Ann in the censuses above, and had swapped her names around??

I've looked up Atcham as per Malyon's recommendation and it seems that it's located very close to Wellington in Shropshire. Therefore, I wonder if the reference to Willington in the 1911 census was a mistake. If so, the reference to Annie Hughes in Atcham may be the lady in question!

I wonder does anyone have any info regarding a marriage for Annie Hughes born 1888 in Pontesbury, Atcham Shropshire? It will be some time after 1911.

I have no idea how old that Annie was - you'd need the marriage cert, unless anyone can find the couple on the 1939 register.

Maybe difficult with such common names.
