I have an identity card showing the above address of an aunt I am trying to trace, Can anyone possibly tell me or tell me where to look to find whether this was a private residence/school/ hospital etc. She worked as a domestic/Cook. Grateful thanks for any help.

59 London Road, Knebworth is a care home at the moment

would this have been an identity card issued in in WW2?

If so, we might be able to find her in the 1939 Register, if you would give us her name

There are mentions in the papers of Longfield, London Road, Dover

Dover Express - Friday 12 March 1948

WOMAN FOUND DEAD

When a visitor called at 'Longfield' London Road, River, on Monday afternoon, and could get no answer, her suspicions were aroused and the Police were informed. Sgt Reid got into the house and found the occupier, Miss Alice Ellen Robson, aged 71, daughter of the former traction engine proprietor, dead in front of the fireplace...
--------------------------------------------

The same address on the 1939 register:

Robson Household (1 Person) "Longfield" London Road River , Dover M.B., Kent, England
Alice E Robson 15 Mar 1876 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Single
-----------------------------------------------

Also mentioned at this address in the papers are M. Middlemass (re a wedding of his daughter in 1942), and Mr & Mrs Pearson (re alterations to the front of the house in 1950)

I still can't see any mention of Longfield in Knebworth. There were other places- this one in Norfolk 1901:

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Longfield, London Road, Wymondham, Forehoe, Norfolk, England

This one found 1891 in Maidstone:

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Longfield, London Road, Maidstone, Kent, England

(this was listed as Longfield, 78 London Road, Maidstone in 1911)
------------------------------------------

On the 1939 register in London Road, Knebworth, Hertfordshire, several of the properties have names eg 'Highfield Cottage', 'Allendale', "Invergordon"- and there are quite a few closed records, so it's possible that one of the closed records may be 'Longfield'.

Thanks so much all you clever people. Edna Margaret Fischer born 13 September 1918. 1939 was lodging in Hackney listed as single. Domestic Assistant in a Hospital. Her identity card shows she was living Shire Lane Farm, Shire Lane,, Nr Tring in November 1940. Then a sticker over the top says living at Longfield, London Road, Knebworth on 9th Sep 1941. She then got married to Horace Williams on 27 September 1941 in Amersham and was resident back at Shire Lane Farm. I have a feeling that she may have been in hospital in Knebworth.
I am trying to help her daughter to find out about her mother who was very mysterious and refused to talk to her daughter about her previous life. She knows virtually nothing and just has a couple of papers, her identity card and her marriage cert to Williams. The fact that she said was single on the 1939 register and on the marriage certificate she said she was a widow but still had the same surname. The other weird thing is she said her father was Rainforth Gunn( It could be Gunn but difficult to read, definitely begins with a G then looks a bit like an eum or nn. Her daughter is convinced it's Gunn.

My head is spinning. I am confused. I though perhaps that Longfield, Knebworth may have provided a family connection but maybe not.

I do thank you all very much for your help and if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

She MAY have listed herself as Single on the 1939 Register because a married woman may not have been allowed to work in that hospital.

I have come across that before

Two Edna M Gunn's were born and births registered in the Sept quarter of 1918

Her marriage registration shows that she had 3 names??

Marriages Sep 1941 (>99%)
Fischer Edna M K Williams Amersham 3a 4294
Williams Horace T Fischer Amersham 3a 4294

Do you have any idea what the 3rd forename was?? It should be on the marriage certificate.

Gwen

Gwen Report 25 Sep 2016 22:13

Her daughter says that her 3rd name was Kathleen. She named her daughter Kathleen BUT that is the only document that the K has appeared.

Well found, Dea!

I couldn't find it at all when I tried!

The image of the 1939 actually shows

Fischer Edna M

But then both Baker and Williams have been added .................... indicating that she must have married a Mr Baker AND a Mr Williams

Austin found the later marriage to Mr Baker :-)

It also looks as though Herbert and Elsie Ashford are the house owners, and Edna and Ruby are boarding or lodging there.
