Thank you Rootgatherer , I think I have been spoilt by a previous piece of research into another branch of my Scottish ancestors ( Archibald) which got back to 1654 with a generation beyond that which was named but undated, but I cannot take credit for that, it was done over many years by quite a few decedents who collaborated, we all had some input and the result was very rewarding. However I realise that from what you and others have said that this is not very common
Once again Id like to thank you and ArgyllGran for all your help. :-)

Stephen, I have been researching Scottish family history for nearly 40 years now and just wanted to say that you have done well getting back to the mid 1700s. Really, unless you are researching an uncommon surname, it's very difficult to pinpoint our families prior to 1855 when Civil Registration began with any certainty.

In a couple of cases I was quite lucky finding a death registration in 1855 for ancestors with common surnames and those registrations (only in that year) gave the names of all the children including children who had predeased them.

I didn't find Catharine/Katherine on the 1841 census, but I did find her death in 1841 12th March on Scotland's People. Listed as Catharine Allan, widow of Ken' McKenzie. Seton Main.
The reference to her name on census returns was my error, her name was mentioned in regard to her children's birth entries, my appologies.

Thanks again.... I'll keep searching with my fingers crossed, but the marriage doesn't seem to be available so far and is not looking to hopeful. ..but you never know ?

I listed four births, and the first one, in Dalkeith in 1765, could still be a slight possibility - though how you could prove it without finding the marriage and then hoping his father's name was on the record, I don't know.

Many thanks ArgyllGran, I had those Children of Kenneth, and the possible birth matches, but your find of the possible death match is exciting, he had died before 1841 ( as listed on his wife's death entry) and the date of 1764 would be in the right area, although it would make him 8 years younger than his wife, but still quite possible. The location also fits.
But the three possible birth matches you listed seem to fit closer to his wife's age .... the puzzle continues
Many thanks for your help . ?

Where did you find Catharine / Kathrine on the 1841 census, Steve?

I can't see it on either Ancestry or FamilySearch.
Is it on FindMyPast?

That 1766 birth is too late for Catherine's birth, if her age at death is more or less accurate.

Some possibilities for Kenneth's birth - at least in roughly the right area!

Not all OPRs have survived so really it's just down to luck. The OPRs, as I understand, are mainly Church of Scotland records so if the couple married in a different church there may not be a surviving record.

I am trying to find a record of the marriage between Kenneth McKenzie and Catharine (Kathrine) Allan, possibly in the Tranent area of East Lothian. They had a son Kenneth McKenzie born 6 Dec 1788 in Tranent, a son named John Alexander McKenzie b.1794, daughter Marion McKenzie b.1792 and son George Logan McKenzie b.1799.
Catharine Allan died 13th March 1841 at Seton Main, Nr Tranent aged 85.
I have found entries for all the children and Catharine's death, but I am unable to find anything for their marriage, Kenneth Mckenzie had already died at the time of his wife Catharine's death. I have searched via Scotland's People and FamilySearch.
Any help would be most welcome. Regards
Steve
