I have now received the birth cert for the Sylvia Wallace that I thought could have been my dad's missing sister, but this appears to not be the case. This lady was born to parents William Wallace and Agnes Wallace (formerly Ball).
So this completely throws my idea that my grandmother Sarah Wallace (formerly Ball) returned to Staffordshire to possibly hide a birth.
I have spoken to a descendant of the only child born to Sarah & her second husband Alfred Talmage and he has confirmed that he recalls My father having a younger sister but again only knew the nickname "Babe".
So the missing daughter can't have been Sarah's child or the the descendant would have have been a relative of his.
I have thought that maybe as someone suggested it may have been a child of one of Claude's siblings that was bought up by her Uncle & Aunt but Claude had three siblings that I know of, Effie, Frank & Lillian but none of them died young so this is unlikely.
I am now totally stumped as I have from two totally independent sources that there was a younger sister.....any ideas on where to try? I have the addresses the family lived at, is there anywhere to see household records?
Any suggestions or assistance would be much appreciated.

Eugenie, in the meantime could you just say who were the parents of Sarah Ball please, just so I can have a look at their family to see if there is a child with them that may be the missing Babe.

Ohh my, I don't know where to start with all this info!
Thank you all so much for all your time and efforts. so appreciated.
The missing sibling is definitely on the side of either Claud/Sarah as I have traced a descendant of Sarah & Alfred Talmage's only son-Alfred(jnr) and he has confirmed what I thought, that Frank & Ivy had another sister but he too only heard her referred to as "Babe" I will post up if the Syliva born to Mother-Ball in Staffordshire is my missing lady once I receive the cert. If not then I have to assume she may have been either Claud's or maybe a relatives child that possibly was taken into the family??

Given that they were both widowed when they married, could the mystery sister be one of Alfred's daughters from his first marriage?

Do you have any information on Sarah's family?
Sometimes an illegitimate child was brought up by their grandparents so maybe she was with them in 1939?
It would be worth checking out her family, just in case.

Thank you everyone.
I have emailed the tree owner of the Sylvia May Wallace, let's hope I get a response.
I am now doubting that the Sylvia Wallace in Staffordshire is "Babe" as this Sylvia married in Cheadle(thanks Catherine) and I believe the lady I am looking for stayed in London although I could be wrong, it's just family hearsay.
I will have to wait until I receive the cert to see if I have been barking up the wrong tree.
If only I knew her name, I know she exists!
Roll on the next available census........... :-S

I have looked to see if there are more than one Sylvia M. Wallace born in 1918 but there is only the one that you have already noted.
In which case, a tree on ancestry has Sylvia M. Wallace born 1918 Staffordshire on their tree. Her middle name is May born 29/03/1918 Married to Robert Fletcher Gibson Died 31/03/2014
No parents names given.
They have some lovely photos too.
This is the marriage for above couple:-
Marriages Sep 1945 (>99%) Gibson Robert F Wallace Cheadle 6b 1012 Wallace Sylvia M Gibson Cheadle 6b 1012
So she should be on 1939 records under her maiden name.

Thank you everyone.
I believe Claud & Sarah married in 1915, probably stated they married in 1907 due to having children in 1909 & 1910.
Does anyone know if there any way I can search for a child born to both/either without knowing the name?
I know there isn't a census available that I could check as "Babe" was born after 1911 but I do have the address Claud & sarah lived at, is there any kind of register that would have more info?

I'm not seeing a marriage that fits with those details.
