Would like some help please trying to find who Emily Butcher married. She was born in Colchester approx 1825/27 According to the 1871 census she was married to a William Henry Fitch, also born Colchester in approx 1818, they had 2 children a William Butcher Fitch b 1865 Gravesed Kent and a Martha Butcher Fitch b Gravesend Kent. On further census Emily Fitch is also listed as Elizabeth Fitch. I found a marriage for Emily Butcher in Colchester 1862. but William Fitch was not listed. I sent away for the birth certificate for Martha Butcher Fitch and her mother is down as being Elizabeth Row not Emily Butcher. Would any of you kind people be able to find who Emily is. many thanks |

Is this William in 1881? He's a widower, no relationship given for Elizabeth, she's unmarried. |

William Butcher Fitch was the son of William & Elizabeth/Emily Fitch. I got the birth certificate of his sister, stating mother was an Elizabeth Row. Both born in Gravesend |

Thanks Sylvialn, I will have to do that.. When mother was in the 1891 and 1901 census and living with her son and family she was down as Elizabeth. Couldn't find Elizabeth in the 1881 census so just wonder if she was registered wrongly on the census and that's her living with William in Swanscombe ( see above) . Taunton Road is not too far from Darnley Road as stated the family living in 1871. Either way with all the different names I am stil unable to find a marriage of William Fitch and Elizabeth/Emily Butcher or Row. |

Couples living together without the benefit of marriage was at least as common back then as it is now. |

I agree Sylvialn, I have one of my ancestors who lived with his " wife" for 20 years unmarried because his 1st was still alive, when she died then they got married. I did see on a previous post about a court case in the newspapers regarding William Fitch and his wife. I tried to view it 3 times because I have some credits but when it opened up the page was blank yet my credits were taken, have you heard about this before, any advice please |

I've heard of it happening on here, but I don't use GR's records. I use other sites. |

Not sure which article you are referring to John, quite a few named William Fitch about!. The article above (which I had added on your Martha 'Thread') mentions Cornelius Haynes, looking at him 1871, he too was a gardener. Rosherville Gardens looks a very nice place (looking on google images!) |

Yes Chris Ho. Rosherville gardens was a nice place, during its hey day, the lords and ladies and even Royalty would sail down from London to spend the day there, they had a bear pit and other animals, suppose it was like a zoo.It closed down not long after WorldWar11, Yes you have the correct William, his daughter was Martha and he was a gardener |

Well chances are there was another Son then, as posted above (did that give Emily or Elizabeth!)... |

I wonder if on the census of 1881 it was written down wrongly for Elizabeth Fitch age 15 and William Fitch age 66 living in Taunton Road Swanscombe both born in Colchester Essex because I am just unable to find his wife Elizabeth in that census yet she was alive then |
