Granny Cook may not have been a relative at all, but just a family friend given "granny" as a courtesy title. |

No idea of great grandma's first name. When we were children we went to visit this old lady that mum said was granny cook.we assumed she was our grandmother but since she was white and grandma was black we realised this was our great grandmother. She lived in Ealing.she died about 1974. Mums dad was an American serviceman who was killed on the somme. Fami!y definitely American as my mother used to say about it. Was the youngest of the children so can remember bits and pieces. I think you all for your help and ideas which I will follow through with all of them. Am now going to look for her birth stateside. Once again thank you all. |

Mary, I'm sorry to keep asking questions, but you said your mother was brought up by your Great Grandmother- Do you know your great Grandmother's name? |

On my grandmother's census it says laundress and on my mother's birth certificate it says laundress . North view East Preston was a workhouse. I am presuming Grandma moved there. Will look further back for any children that Grandma had but never spoke about |

Thank you everyone my grandmother was at the Manchester place you mention. My mother told me that my grandmother never put my grandfather's name on the birth certificate because he was killed in the first world war. He was coloured as was my grandmother was also. My grandmother must have moved to north view east Preston workhouse as that is where my mother was born. She is Mary louise Daniels April 21st 1916. My mother said she had a brother called Richard who was either two years older or two years younger then her.she said he got sent to America. I am now trying to trace her journey from Baltimore to here and her years between 1911 and Her death. My mother did say. Something about them being buried in Hastings but she was raised by my great grandmother so unsure. My mother would never talk to us about her life so it's like getting blood from a stone. Mum died November 9th 2000 |
