Hi all again. I need to pose a question. I have found the transcription of a marriage for my great great grandparents in 1811 but everywhere I look it says no image available. I am looking for the names of their fathers. It is between William Francis and Mary Griffin. The 1st Jan 1811 Christ Church, Grey Friars, Newgate, London. I am now stumped. Where can I go now???? Any ideas? Thanks. :-S

The image is on Ancestry but no fathers' names. I don't think fathers' names were recorded on marriage records that early.

It is very rare to find father's name on Parish registers before about 1837, when it became law for bmds to be registered.

You MIGHT be able to find baptisms for William and Mary ............ although they are fairly common names.

You might be able to work out something based on the names given their children.

In case it offers any help .......

the witnesses at the marriage were Sophia Young and J Knight

I did notice though, Sylvia, that J. Knight was also a witness on a few of the other marriages so evidently not a relative.

He was probably a "Professional Witness"

I was called away so posted in a hurry, and forgot to check that point

Any chance that either bride or groom had a later marriage?

If that 2nd marriage was after late 1837 then the fathers should be recorded.

I found the name of one of my direct ancestors using this method.

Sometimes an aged parent is living with their child at census time.

Hi all. Thank you so much for all of your input. Lots to think on. Their first born son was called William Griffin Francis born 1812. Their first born daughter was called Mary Ann born in 1815. They are keeping with tradition with first names. As far as I am aware there wasn't a second marriage for either of them because I have traced them through the census. I will go over all of my research again incase I have missed anything. I think I have traced Mary Griffin's parents who were William Griffin and Elizabeth Ellen. I will carry on and hopefully turn something up. Thank you all again.Lesley. :-) <3
