Just to update anyone watching this thread Sarah Leatherland and her son James was admitted to Nottingham Workhouse on 6th Sept 1881 so the newspaper report that alviegal mentioned above must have been Sarah.

There is an article in the newspaper.
Unknown 06 September 1881 - Nottingham Evening Post - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England
Now I'm not saying it is your Sarah Leatherland, but it is a middle aged destitute woman who was charged with abandoning her child.
A Police Officer had found the child, wrapped in a coat, lying in an ash pit, amongst the rubbish. The mother appeared after about 40 mins and lay down beside the child. She claimed to live there and had no means of subsistence. The Town Missionary said he had known her for some years and she was sent to the workhouse.
It is a very sad story and if it is Sarah, perhaps she had left Thomas and the child was James?
More than likely, they are entirely different people.
