Hi,

I have a census in 1871 of James and Ann Mead. It is very clear in the original that her birthplace was Lamb, Suffolk. I have a probable marriage 14 Oct 1867 in St. Mary, Lambeth with her as Ann Crisp daughter of George. In 1871 they have one child James A. age 9 (also easy to read) born in Westminster. James Mead was a son of Abel which this marriage shows. I have been unable to find any other records, so would appreciate those too.

Yes, that is the family. His mother Rebecca is the sister of David Rollings. my second great-grandfather.

I meant to mention that he was a bachelor and I have found many families who had children before marriage. So he could be their child or a child of a previous relationship. One of his uncles had two children before marriage by two different women and married his wife three months before their first child. . .

"Layham is a small village and a civil parish in southern Suffolk, England, situated between the town of Hadleigh and the neighbouring village of Raydon."

I wonder if it is possible that Ann said she was born in "Layham", and her Suffolk accent made it sound like "laaam", and the enumerator put down what he THOUGHT she'd said

Lamb

??????

Thank you all,

I think the answer is here, but I'll have to go back and do some diagramming tp be sire which is the real one.

Sylvia, It does seem reasonable that Layham is the original of Lamb.

Shirley and Chris - I really like the one with Ann as a grandau of Elizabeth with child James. I am amazed at how much you both found with what I had to go on. Had given up trying to find without any idea where Lamb was; although I did think James (the child) might have been hers.alone.

Chris - Also thank you for demonstrating that Find My Past has the Westminster baptisms as have James' siblings and cousins with just census info.

I won't mark this answered until I have a chance to really determine if you have found her. Am doing some Belgium for a client so will probably work on this again on Saturday or Sunday. In the meantime, someone may add something more.

I have several others where I seem to be at a dead end. Will be adding one periodically.

Thank you again

Well the 1851 where Ann is with Elizabeth Butcher, her Grandmother is in Lambeth with Son Edgar Crisp, notes on 1861, living with him is a cousin, Naomi Butcher (1830)...

Those particular Westminster Baptisms, are also on Ancestry, London.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/

(above is usually good for Suffolk, but nothing Raydon/Layham)

Couldn't see James Mead after 1871...

Chris :)

(oh, just to add, notes second marriage 1852 of Edgar Crisp, spouse looks to have connections with the Thomas Cook Hills, that the Hariett Crisp Marries in 1859!, probably all relate!, so perhaps Layham and Raydon would have featured with Ann, don't suppose she was ever told about her mothers 1841 time in Essex, lol (that wasn't too far from Raydon)
She might have stayed with Edgar at some time perhaps, in London, he and wife were witnesses at 1864 Marriage of Asenath!. so perhaps Layham was in her memory, who knows!...)
