missing mother's name

Dea, "tends" is right as not every missing MMN means the mother is unmarried. I have seen some where it is not shown, but I have the certs which do have the MMN. |

Kath - the mother's maiden names have been added right back to 1837 if you use the new search on the GRO website............. |

It depends on what year the birth took place. The mother's maiden name was only added to the GRO index after 1911, so before this it isn't there (although I think they are starting to go back and add the maiden name at the moment but I don't think they have completed this yet). The maiden name WILL be on the birth certificate though. |

can someone tell me why when I find a birth on the gpo index that mother's name is missing could it mean the child was just left somewhere |
