The above couple came from Gloucestershire
They has Sylvia 1925 Kathleen 1928 Leonard 1930 Audrey 1931 Margaret 1933 Sheila 1935
It is believed the couple also had twin boys who died. How do I find out if this was true? Do not know their names
Thankyou
|
If the twins lived, there will be public records. If they were stilllborn there won't, as there is a closed register for stillbirths
|
How do I look for children if I only know the parent’s names?
Thankyou

Look at freebmd, and put in the surnames of the parents in the appropriate boxes.
I've just done that, and only the names you list are recorded

and possible death:
Deaths Sep 1932 Price John H aged 0 Gloucester 6a 298
Maybe a twin but the other child stillborn??
|
Oh brilliant thank you very much
|
Nice one, Tiggit - I should have gone to Specsavers! Didn't notice that one.
Elizabeth........... if the child John was a twin, I think the time of birth should be on the birth cert. It usually is, but there may be a difference in the legal requirements if the other twin is stillborn. I'm sure some of the experienced helpers on here will know
|
Thank you both very much.

To search the printed GRO index, go to: https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Enter the father's surname, and the mother.s maiden surname and search births:
Births Mar 1925 (>99%) Price Sylvia C Asher Wheatenhurst 6a 518

You can search for marrs in a similar way, but it fails when the bride was a widow as she would marry under her widowed surname. It works here, though, so I click on the page number to see all the names on the page and get:
Marriages Dec 1923 (>99%) Asher Mary E Price Stroud 6a 719 Price Percy Asher Stroud 6a 719

If I click on the above "Gloucester" link, then the the "here" link, I get info on the civil parishes in the RD headed by:
GLOUCESTER REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Gloucestershire. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1937 (to become part of Gloucester City, Gloucester Rural and Cheltenham registration districts). Re-created : 1.4.1974 (out of Gloucester City and Gloucester Rural registration districts). Abolished : 1.4.2006 (to become part of Gloucestershire registration district). Sub-districts : Barnwood, Gloucester, Gloucester Northern, Gloucester Southern, Kingsholme, St. John the Baptist, St. Nicholas, South Hamlet GRO volumes : XI (1837-51), 6a (1852-1937), 22 (1974-92). Registers currently held at : Gloucestershire.
Similarly for Wheatenhurst: WHEATENHURST REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Gloucestershire. Created : 1.7.1837. Abolished : 1.4.1937 (to become part of Gloucester Rural registration district). Sub-districts : Frampton, Haresfield, Wheatenhurst. GRO volumes : XI (1837-51), 6a (1852-1937). Registers currently held at : Gloucestershire.
The subdistricts listed are all those that were ever used in the RD.
This is a listing of piece #s (organized by subdistruct) in use at the time of the 1911 census:
RD325 Gloucester SD1 Barnwood 15266-15280 (15280 ED 15-17) SD2 Gloucester Northern 15281-15294 (15293 ED 13-15) SD3 Gloucester Southern 15295-15325
RD326 Wheatenhurst SD1 Haresfield 15326-15334 SD2 Frampton 15335-15343
There are 2 places (3 for recent church marrs) where I can buy an official BMD cert, namely the local district office that now holds the rego the informant signed, and the GRO who hold copies. So John Henry's death would have been rego'ed at the nearby Gloucester Northern subdistrict office. At the end of the quarter, all the Gloucester Northern's subdistrict Bs and Ds were copied out, checked over by the district superintendent in Gloucester - who retained ant completed rego's. The proceedure for Ms was similar, except the original marr rego's were usually held by a church, and an identical copy of each rego was made by the superintendent. Until 1898, only the established church (i.e., CofE or CofW), plus jews, quakers, and registrars were authorized to keep official marr rego's. In 1898, non-conformists could apply to be authorized to keep official marr rego's (although the RCs chose not to apply until 1980ish). So if a non-conformist marr took place, and the church had no authorized person, an asst registrar would have to attend with his official rego for the couple to sign. At the emd of every quarter, the superintendent had another copy of all the authorized marrs, plus his asst registrars' rego's, plus his rego office marrs made. Completed church rego's would be turned in, and after checking were deposited in some archive - usually the county records office. The quarterly copies of the Bs and Ds fr0m each subdistrict, and the marr copies as detailed above were all collected and shipped of to the GRO in London (later Southport).
If you think about it, it's clear the local office stores its records differently from the GRO's storage. Since I can buy a BMD cert from a local office, a local index would help and there are some online - see: https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd and in particular: http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/
Now, a local index must have a local ref, and most local indexes give the ref online - although they may not fully explain it. E.g.,
Births Jun 1911 (>99%) Smithson Raymond Glanford B. 7a 689
GLANFORD BRIGG REGISTRATION DISTRICT Abolished : 1.10.1938 (to become part of Scunthorpe registration district). Sub-districts : Barton, Brigg, Scunthorpe, Winterton. Registers currently held at : North Lincolnshire.
(North Lincolnshire) Index results for selected person Full name Raymond SMITHSON Register number * WINT.68 Entry number * 97
Now,it's not hard to guess WINT is the code for Winterton. However, church codes are impossible, although R or, say, ROL or ROW often indicates a registrar's rego - ROL and ROW distinguish the Leigh and Wigan registrars in the now amalgamated district.

You can search for so8406 or the slightly more precise SO 841 068 given in the blurb following the image at: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ It gives you a streetmap at zoom level 2 It's not particularly helpful - zooming out to zoom level 3 or 4 is better here (zoom level 4 appears on geograph's mini inset map). The church has a tower, so is symbolized by a square blob with a + on top (spires are round blobs with a +);

If it helps to identify the event, a local index may give info that differs from the GRO index. E.g., the above shows mid-names, not just initials - it also gives John Henry's age at death more precisely. It might give the year of birth rather than just the quarter of rego (noting one has 6w to rego a birth in England), e,g,,
