Hi Everyone thanks for all your replies I'm sorry if I miss led anyone with this thread I didn't continue on the previous one as in that I was actually having trouble finding the census listings which I did in the end thanks to people's help. I started a new thread because I thought this was a different question.. This thread was more about the mentioned individual I named and the spelling of his name.. I was actually interested in the fact that baby Donaghue( if that is the spelling) was the only baby in the barracks at the time ( I was probably hoping that he had been born there!) I, d tried searching with varients on the names with no joy so I was just trying to get other opinions on what the names actually read I was aware that Irish records are a bit thin on the ground I guess I hoped that because the baby was listed as being born in Kent that there may be some record of his birth all be it a parish record Thanks to everyone whose given their input and ideas. I will look at each I'm sure they will all help. In the end I may never know but it's that searching that becomes so addictive! :-)

In 1841, the particular regiment(s) isn't/aren't recorded, unfortunately.
In 1851 there seems to be a great mixture: 80th , 26th, 83rd, 94th, 22nd, 70th, 8th, 10th Regiments.
Even if the same regiments were there in 1841, it's still no help in tracking down John Donoghue.
Ancestry has a few Chelsea Pensioner records for men of that name , born in Ireland 1817-26, from various units - but no way to know if any of them could be that man.

Looking at the IMAGE, I would suggest that the name is DonOghue - as per Ancestry's transcription , rather than DonAghue as per FMP
Any thoughts?

Although the birth posted by JoonieCloonie may well be the right one, don't assume that it definitely is.
As GG said, there was no penalty for not registering a birth at that time. The census says the child was born in Kent. If that's correct, there's no Donaghue (or variation of spelling) birth registered in Kent 1840-41.
If born in Frindsbury, the reg district would have been North Aylesford.

The man could have left the Army by 1851 and returned to Ireland with his family

Since the other thread was general info and this is about a specific family, I'm going to answer here.
The General Register Office births index
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
has this info:
DONAGHUE, JAMES mother's surname: BROPHY GRO Reference: 1841 March Quarter in ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS MIDDLESEX Volume 01 Page 124
That matches up with the info you have.
The index doesn't show any other Donaghue-Brophy births up to 1850 (including asking for similar-sounding surnames).

If John remained a Soldier, he could be anywhere in the world 10 years later, or have left the Army and be working another trade. And not necessarily with Celia and/or James for whatever reason. John and Celia could be aged between 30 and 34 by 1851 as census ages in 1841 of over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5.
I'm not seeing any of them individually or together on the 1851 England/Wales nor in Scotland. Nor am I seeing a birth registration for James (Surname variations included) in late 1840/early 1841 - but there was no penalty for not registering a birth until the 1870's.
If they were back in Ireland, well there really wasn't a census that has survived until those of 1901 and 1911

your previous thread - always better to continue on the original so helpers don't have to go back and forwards looking for what has already been found

Evening everyone so I have asked asked helped before about the soldiers at Upnor Castle I work at the castle and am doing a census project I wonder if someone could have a look at a particular family on the castles census of 1841? the civil parish is Frindsbury Kent but the census page clearly says upnor castle so the family is listed as Donaghue father John mother Celia and on genes a male child of 5 months on Genes the child is listed as James ...on ancestry as Ioma? on ancestry too the parents birth places are recorded as being Ireland and that would make sense as there were a lot of Irish soldiers at the castle the child is registered as being born in Kent I have tried on Genes and ancestry to find them in the following 1851 census to no avail. Cant seem to find them in any tree search on either sites and have tried a quick link on an irish records with no joy either would someone be able to have a look and see what they think the child's name is ? any ideas where I could look next? John the father was listed as a labourer but the men at the castle were actually soldiers Thanks
