Daniel Beckley 1791 - 1850 was my three times grandfather. The brickwall is - where did he come from before the family lived in Tubney and who were his ancestors? There is thought that he changed his name from the Beckinsales that lived in the Bampton, Aston area in Oxfordshire, in fact Ancestry suggests that this Daniel Beckinsale 1788 is my third times grandfather, but he has different descendants in other peoples family trees that i have checked. One of Daniel Beckleys sons, Gabriel Beckley 1815 was born in Tubney (then Bekshire) is shown as Beckinsale on his marriage certificate in 1847which also shows his father' name to be Beckinsale. On their death certificates they are shown as Beckley.

It may be that the 'trees' on Ancestry are based on false assumptions.
Many trees on that site are works of fiction, so unless you can verify their info, trust only your own research
On 1841 census, Daniel's birthplace is NOT Berkshire

For INFO.............to help the helpers

Bampton Aston, Oxfordshire is not too far from Tubney now Oxfordshire then Berkshire.
Parish records for Tubney would be held in Berkshire.
I agree that you cannot take other peoples trees for the truth. Even the best researchers make mistakes. You need to follow through with the family you are sure of and do the research. I do know that Oxfordshire FHS records are very good, I don;t know how good the Berkshire ones are. added. Don't forget that accents can make a bif difference to other people spellings one name.

A big thank you to everyone who answered my post.

FWIW .................
it was not unusual for people to change the spelling of their surname even back then. It is still does not actually require any legal procedures. All someone has to do is to make it known to anyone who needs to know that "as from this date, I "John Smith" will be known as Bertie Smellworthy".
As long as there is no criminal intent, then no-one worries. I still see name changes like this regularly in our local newspaper.
Also FWIW, one of my ancestors changed the spelling of their name from Bucktrout to Buckright, then some descendants spelled it Buckwright.
My grandfather's grandfather changed the family name from Scholefield to Schofield. By the time grandfather came along, he had cousins where half the family went under Schofield and the others had reverted back to Scholefield.
TBH, I gave up on them!
