Hi David OK, I think I've sorted them out. Your Sheriffs were driving me potty, so I went on scotlandspeople and got the marriage cert of Alexander Sheriffs and Margaret Agnes Gibb. This is what I think is the story; Alexander Sheriffs was born on 17 July 1862 @ Kirkden, Angus, to George Sheriffs and Ann Taylor. (so he was older than 15 in 1881). George Sheriffs and Ann Taylor were married (or at least banns were called at both of their churches) on 5th/11th June 1853 @ Dunnichen/Kirkden, Angus. Ann Taylor died. George Sheriffs then married Isabella Hall on 08 April 1872, @ Arbuthnott, Kincardine (not far from the above places in Angus). (All of the above info available free on the familysearch site) This therefore, as sent before, is your Alexander sheriffs with his dad and stepmother in 1881. Graeme Sorry no luck with your Taits. There's no English Isabella Taits at all. Their is one b.1808 living in the Poor House at South Leith, who I thought might be Adam's, but it gives her maiden name as 'Dook' No Adam Tait. Several James Taits b. around 1855, but no way to tie any of them in to your folks.Have you checked the 1871 on scotlandspeople to try and find them all together and get a possible address? Hi Ellen, A while ago you looked up some Sheriffs in Brechin for me but I don't believe they are the right ones. I was wondering if you could check for an Alexander Sheriffs/Sherriffs in Angus for me. I would expect him to be no older than 15 Yrs at the most. Hi Ellen Thanks for the kind offer. I am trying to locate an Isabella Tait (nee Ballantyne), probably in Edinburgh or Leith. She was born in Halifax , Yorkshire in 1823, but married a John Tait in 1854, not sure where (b Portobello Edinburgh 1825 but died 1876). The reason I think she may have still been in Scotland and not Yorkshire is that their son James Tait was born in Edinburgh in 1855. Anything you can find would be a bonus. Aslo looking for an Adam Tait, b South Leith 1805 and his wife Isabella (nee Ferguson) b Edinburgh 1804. They married in South Leith in 1824. But likely were dead by time of 1881 Census. Hi Beth Rachel could be registered under either name. If dad went to register the birth, she could be registered under either, as the registrar would accept his word of paternity. If mum went herself, the birth would be under mum's surname, as the registrar would not accept mum's word of paternity. The child's birth becomes legitimised on the subsequent marraige of the parents, but they could not change the original birth cert. There would probably be an 'RCE' (register of corrected entries) notation on the left hand side margin on the cert if this was the case. Good Luck. Ellen.

At that time they gave their ages as 21 and 22 respectively. I believe Emily was born in Kilsyth and Peter in Blantyre. Peter was a coal miner Many thanks Beth :)
