According to this below, the 93rd Regiment wasn't in India as early as 1947-49:

Welcome to the boards, Janice.

Stewart is in all later censuses (1881-1911), too, but I'm working back from 1871, when he's still with his mother.

The family must have returned to Scotland from India between 1853 and 1861.

My guess is that the father David was in the army, and died in India - or perhaps Jean/Jane and David separated.

I don't see any record of their marriage.

The son Henry is surnamed Stewart, so appears not to be David's son.

ADDED:
I had a look at that 1856 birth cert, and I'm now not sure if that 's the correct Henry Stewart or not.

He was illegitimate, but his mother is said to be aged 23 - though Jean may have lied, as her partner appears to have been younger.
The cert first names Henry as Todd, then Todd is scored out and Stewart inserted.
Jean is first named Todd, with maiden name Stewart, then Todd is scored out, and just the name Stewart is left.
A father, Francis Todd, 22, baker, is named, but then he's completely scored out.

I doubt that Jeffrey will be looking for replies after over 18 years

Click on his name to send a message, of which GR will notify him IF he still has the email address he registered with the site. He will then have the option of responding -if he is able and willing so to do.

My Great Grandfather Stewart Milne was born in Bombay in 1849/50. How can I find out details of his baptism in Bombay as this appears the only way to find his mothers details. Unsure when he returned to the UK, but he was married in 1875 and this provided his fathers details but I cannot find his mothers details as there is no UK birth record. Jeff
