The County Lunatic Asylum on Lancaster Moor, opened in 1816 and since enlarged, is a stately quadrangular building of stone, with a handsome front, relieved by pillars of the Doric order, and will hold 1,200 patients. The annexe, completed in 1882 at a cost of 125,000, occupies a site comprising an area of about 41 acres. The buildings are constructed of stone; in the centre of the block over the main entrance is a clock tower about 100 feet in height, and there are smaller ones at the front, extremity of each wing: the building also includes a fine dining hall 120 feet long by 60 feet wide and 60 feet high: this annexe provides additional space for about 900 patients: David Mackay Cassidy M.D., D.Sc., L.R.C.P. & F.R.O.S. Edin. Medical superintendent; Thomas Philip Cowen M.D

(For 1911 Census, Name of Asylum must have been above, as Thomas Philip Cowen was 'Assistant Medical Officer' going back quite a few pages to see!)

LUNACY IN LANCASHIRE. Dr. Thomas Philip Cowen, third assistant medical officer, Prestwich Asylum;

The 1891 census he was born in Wigan and is listed as an 'idiot' (all others on the page are listed as lunatic) so I think it would be a mental asylum. 'None' listed as his profession

I'm loking for this guy: Births Jun 1875 (>99%) Watkin William Wigan 8c 3
He's with his family in 1881, but missing thereafter. I think this is his death: Deaths Mar 1918 (>99%) Gwatkin William 42 Lancaster 8e 974

I do have possible hits in 1891 and 1911 I'ld be grateful if someone could provide further details of these censuses, especially what sort of institution he was in and his 1891 birthplace Also, any help with 1901 would be welcome.

FMP First name(s) Last name Birth year Birth place Registration district Parish County W G 1875 Lancs Wigan Lancaster Lancaster Lancashire
Ancestry treats W G as his forename - FMP treats W as his forename and G as his surname I looked in piece 255555 (which is the institutions piece for Lancaster).

Footnote As a surname, Gwatkin roughly means Walter's kin. At this point, I realized I'd no idea what kith meant. Well, it means friends, but it's obsolete except for the phrase "kith and kin".
