Hi Prickles You have been busy. The name Julia Mary Cooper formerly Johnson is on my Grandads birth certificate. The name William Frederick Cooper is on there as his father. I also have purchased a birth certificate for who I thought was Williams father but don't know how to find out if this really is his father. The name shows William Frederick Cooper born in Islington with parents Charles Cooper and mother Ann Cooper formerly Shephard................how do I know if this is them? Rosemarie

Hi Rosemarie
Thank you for your reply on here.
Three times I have tried to reply to you on here, to explain things. But this site is playing up big time at the moment......so I will have to get back to you tomorrow.
I think if you slowly take your time to read through all the information provided, you will find that your William Frederick Cooper was born 1858 in Braintree, Essex.
The son of Joseph Cooper and Caroline Craske.
Births Mar 1858 (>99%) Cooper William Frederick Braintree 4a 327

Amazing what you have found out about my family. I have never put 2 and 2 together to realise that Mary Ann was also married to my Great Grandad William Frederick. Yes an amazing woman to take on her husbands children from another woman. What programs did you use to do your research. I have only used Genes and Free BMD so far so there is obviously something better. You should be doing some training courses for the likes of us that struggle :-)

Morning Rosemarie
I use Ancestry for my research.
You can also see from William's marriage record to Mary Ann, that he names his father as Joseph.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any further information about what happened to William and Julia.

Re Thomas's occupation in 1861, posted above by PH -
I think it says "before the mast", which will mean he wasn't an officer.
http://www.ussbrainedd630.com/terms.htm Before the mast - Literally, the position of the crew whose living quarters on board a ship were in the forecastle (the section of a ship forward of the foremast). The term is also used more generally to describe seamen as compared with officers, in phrases such as “he sailed before the mast.”

Double checked and yes you are right AG.
