"A Prappa Day Out - Sure Nuff"

Yer! Did I ever tell'ee 'bout time us went to the vust Dem' County Shaw?
Well 'thwer a few year agon now, but I can mind it s'well as if twuz lass week. You zee zome o' the gentry- sech volk as the Squire up to the big 'house an' zome gennelmen varmers got spackin' 'bout 'avin' a get - together wer they cued shaw off zome of their 'osses an' cattle. Zeemed they 'ad a bit of a mactin' an' wot wi' one an' t'other of 'em, they cummed up wi' the idaya of this yer Dem' County Shaw.

Well yer naws 'ow' 'tis wi' the gentry, they 'as to do a maister lot o' talkin' vor they gets on wi' the job an' gets ort dood, but in the aend the gert day cummed. There wuz dree of us gwain - me missus, me cuzin Zpedigue vot varms over to Barncott an' mezel. Me missus had a bit o' a bake-upeen the cloam omm an' 'er dood zome tiddy an' mate pasties an' a vew tarts an' zich like an' rapped mun up een clane cloths an' packed mun een 'er market baskit ready ver the morning.
---------------------------------------------------

Us got our milkin' dood a bit early - 'bout vive - an' off us goes wi' 'oss an' trap. Us cummed een over Cowley Bridge, pass the 'Pack 'Oss' an' up over North Street.

Now me missus zaid 'er did'n want ver to gaw traipsin' 'roun' the Shaw, lookin' at 'osses an' effers - 'er zeed they every day of the yer, 'er zaid. Wot 'er wanted du wuz leuk roun' the shaps wi' 'er zister wot lives een Exeter. Zo 'er got out corner 'igh Street an telled us to mate 'er een the zame place at zix o'clock. Down over Zouth Street us goes an' out to the Shaw Yard.'Course, be this time there wuz a vew other volk wi' the zame idays an' it tooked us a liddle wiles to get een, but when us did, us 'itched the 'oss an ztarted to 'av a leuk roun'.

My gar, you nivver zeed zo many volks all to one place een me live avore. There wuz varmers like us all got up een their zindy-go-to-Matins' britches an' leggins, there wuz the gentry wi' their top 'ats an cigars an' there wuz the drovers an zitch like een their zmocks wi' doags to 'eel. Us zeed a vew ladies roun' but most of they wen' off arter a bit to the shaps een Exeter - like me missus.
--------------------------------------------------

Well, like I zaid, us ztarted to 'av a leuk roun' but there wuz a maister lot to zee, us didn't 'ardly naw wot to leuk at vust. Anyways, us wuz near the pigs, zo us 'ad a leuk at the zows an' vears.Prapper viddy they wuz - all claned up an' washed ver the Shaw.

Then us wen on to zee the sheap. My gar, there wuz zome maister vine leukin' yaws an' rams een every breed. 'Course, us runs Longwools zo us wuz kane to 'av a gude leuk at they, but I mus' zay, the Dartmoors an' Exmoors an' Orns, as well as they Lesters, wuz aall as purty as a picture. They wuz all zheared an' brished an' combed an' made suiant zo I don't naw 'ow the jidges could 'cide one vrum t'other or which wuz best.

'Bout this time, us cummed to a tent an' een thicky they wuz zelling zider an' beer, zo me and Zpedigue 'cides it wuz time us wets our oozles. Zo us 'ad one or two an' on agin to zee the cattle.

Az you'd 'zpect, they wuz mostly Dems, but there wuz a vew Zhortoms, an' zum of they Channel Ilans. Wot purty liddle bastes they wuz too - leuked too purty to be gude milkers, but they telled un that the milk be zo zwate an vull o' crame as yude nivver belave.

'Bout this time, they wuz jidgin' zum of the Zouth Dems een the ring, zo us 'ad a lane on the rail an' zeed they ver a bit.

-------------------------------------------------

Next, us thought us ud go an' 'av a leuk at the 'osses. Us ztarted wi' the pponies, but hten us zeed the 'freshment tent tent zo Zpedigue an' me drapped een ver one or two ver to kape us gwain wile us wuz walkin' down drue the 'oss lines. There wuz zum bootivul gert stallions - Zuffolks, Clydesdales an' Zhires. there wuz mares an' voles, colts, geldins, 'acks an' a maister lot of ponies vrum all over Dem. Prapper brave shaw it made, an' the 'osses zeemed to naw there wuz zumthin' special gwain on the way they 'eld their 'aids up and ztepped 'igh.

Morning to one and all,
Frank,Honestly I wouldn't dream of using that sprinke stuff on my roasties. They are one of the few things I do that I am proud of lol.I do have to have the right spuds though .I always use Maris Pipers.
A dull, damp, and miserable day but still mild.
Frank do you know a place called the Olive Tree in i think Chris said Clipsham Nr Rutland? We are going there for lunch on Friday.

Sheila ,April obviously had a great time with Beryl and Droopy Draws lol
I bet your OH will makes sure he rinses the pan properly next time he has his soup.
I hope the weather improves a bit for you all on thursday, and that Matts funeral is a peaceful affair.I also hope the Jessica has the type of funeral she wishes for her husband.

When are Damsons available ?Does anyone know.Chris is wanting to make some Damson Gin.We have the Sloe Gin maturing (or whatever it's called) under the stairs.

I better get myself dressed and then do the potatoes and veg. Then as I will home all day I will tackle that blooming ironing yet again.

This is the last bit!!

Be this time, me an' Zpedigue wuz valein' us cud do wi' a bite t'ate, zo us goad over to the 'oss an' trap to get zum of me missus's pasties. Us put the veed bag on Dolly an' went to the 'freshment tent to 'ay a vew wi' our dinner.Us zeed a lot o' volks us naw'd an 'bein' a special day out, they buyed us a vew an' us buyed they a vew, an wot wi' one an t'other, us wuz valein' t'wuz 'bout time us walked it off a mite, zo off us goes to 'ave a leuk at the varm impliments, an' zo on.
Me an' Zpedigue wuz thinkin' of buying a vew new things, so us 'ad a gude leuk 'roun' at wot the different makers wuz offerin'. Zum o' the zellin' vellers 'ad a vew virkins of zider an' zum gin an' if they thought you wuz a zairious buyer, they gived ee a drap o' this or that, an in the aend, us 'ardly naw'd 'ow to chooze.
I wuz taken wi' wot Beares, down Newton Abbot 'ad got on shaw, zo I ordered a new Winnowin' Machine vrom they at eight poun' vive shillin'.

Een caze you zhould think that all the exhibitors cummed vrom Exeter an'roun', there wuz plenty vrom other parts o' Britain, an' even zeveral American virms. One o' they wuz the Zinger Manufact'ring Company. they wuz zellin' these yer machines ver to 'elp the wimmin volk an' maids to do the zewin', an' wuz priced vrum zix poun' ten zhillin' to thirty vive poun'! Gude job me missus wuzn't wi' us else 'er'd a wanted one o' they, but I thought I'd better get zumthin' ver 'er, zo I buyed 'er a new dree-legg'd cricket ver 'er to do 'er milkin', cuz one 'o the legs of 'erz 'ad cummed out,an' erd valled een the dung an' zpilled half a bucket o' milk, zo I reckoned 'twuz a zort of' 'vestment as well as a present.

Be this time, us wuz valein' us 'ad 'ad nuff traipsin' roun', zo us went back to 'freshment tent where us zeed a vew more volks us naw'd. Well us buyed they a vew gins an' they buyed us a vew back. 'Course, it would'nt nivver do to let me missus naw that I 'ad one or two when 'er wadden leukin' but then you got to let yerzel go now an' then, amn ee?

Now Zpedigue 'ad ad a drap or two more'n me zo I thought 'twer 'bout time I wuz gettin' ee 'omewards, zo I 'elped'n over to the 'oss an' trap. Afterwards, ee vowed as' declared ee wuz 'elpin' me! Us went back dru Exeter an' 'long the Cowley Road an wot wi' the zound o' the 'oss's ooves an' the one or two draps o' this an' that, us 'ad 'ad us nodded off. Course, Dolly naw'd 'er way 'ome an' twuz only when 'er cummed een the yard an' stopped outside 'er ztable that us woked up. 'Twadden long vor us wuz t'bade an' zoun' a slape.

Me missus? Oh ace, I 'ad ver to go back to Exeter next day to 'er zister's, cuz I'd vergot all 'bout matein' 'er at six o'clock like 'er telled me. Did'nt I yer all 'bout it wen 'er zeed me! And didden I yer all 'bout it all the way 'ome! Oh ace you, I shan't nivver vergit the vust Dem County Shaw - me Missus zees to that!

We had some sun this morning ,but the rain has now arrived .
We enjoyed our meal last night ,we didn't realise how much rain had fallen until we were on our way home ,the roads were flooded right across in places , we have only just had some thing to eat as we were so full from last night !!!

Mel, some of the story needs translating for me lol

Sheila, its so sad that the family carn't agree on the funeral arrangements ,did he leave a will with his wishes as to what sort of funeral he wanted ?
What ever happens i hope it all goes ok for you all.

Afternoon All
Great story Mel, struggled a bit at times but got the jist of most of it.
wet here but thankfully not cold.

I enjoyed our Harvest Service this morning in church, how did yours go Mel. our services are usually from 10.45 to 12.00 but this morning it was from 10.45 to 11.30 and there was no sunday school so the little ones had to stay in church all the time but they were very good.
We have a harvest collection , adults put in Harvest envelopes and children fill up a container with pennies, this year are charity is called PRACTICAL ACTION
we are collecting for Zimbabwe for people who need to make money for to pay for their childrens education, people out there are needing money to buy Chickens to breed then they will sell the new chickens in the market and they want to buy goats for the milk and to also sell them in the market
Not sure how much was donated will find out next Sunday.

Going to do some sewing and a bit of Tapestry work,

Afternoon All,

Have sent you an e-mail Jane.

Rain has stopped here, but there are puddles in the garden. We tried to go to Home*ase this morning but there were cars all over the place, as students were turning up for college with their parents.....lots of goodbyes going on.

Mel, that was hard work to follow, but got a bit easier as you got into it.....didn't get the cloam omm either!! lol I do like the idea of a bring and share supper.......having a bit of this and that, smashing.

That sounds a very good cause Fiona.......however much is collected will be a big help to those people.

SIL brought Sofia down for dinner not that she eat much but a few grapes.
She is still not well, yesterday afternoon her temperture reached 39 which is not good the normal temp is 37. 40 is bad.

Daughter rang the NHS and they asked daughter to bring her up to the hospital , so they both went up with Sofia and the doctor said that her temp was high and they did the right thing bringing her up to the hospital
the doctor checked her over and she has a virus, doctor gave daughter some more medicine which has to be given along with the calpol 3 times aday, poor little thing her nose was running, eyes running, and wheezing too.

I didn't like to say anything to SIL( I'm only the MIL) but I really thought they should have stayed at home,
daughters still at work started at 9.00 this morning and won't be home till 8 to night . he probably needed a break, it was easier for him to get his dinner at our house than try and make something at home with Sofia wanting his attention. hopefully she will be better soon.

Jane Report 3 Oct 2010 21:04
