Elizabeth Hi sorry this is sent so late but I have been unable to get on the
the computor my daughters been on it most of today. I do indeed remember
gobbstoppers that changed colour .i used to hold them to lick them and got my hands all
sticky.not very nice when I tried corking that thing with the nails in that you
put on hooks and pulled it through the hole. I used to give it my couson back
and it was all sticky. Did you choke at all Elizabeth sucking that stuff through
the straw but loved it and kalie. . I loved Barley Sugar sticks my mum was a bit funny about sweets and
when she bought anything back it was Barley Sugar sticks I was allowed one
if I was good and did the washing up. Did you have blood oranges I used to
roll mine which made it juicy cut off the end and fill it with sugar and suck the
juice out because they were sharp . I love PAUL ANKA that gorgeous dark
haired lad I do have Diana on a recent cd of old 50 60 and 70 songs so will
have to dig it out and listen. I forgot radio luxenberg and I listened to that
late at night sometimes in bed when I should have been asleep I used to
turn it off when I heard mum come the stairs. I agree with your dad I remember
songs did have funny words though years ago . I mean Im so young and your
so old enough to make you hit him. oh how lovely living in Devon it rains here
a lot Elizabeth being in the Midlands. Do you have a lovely garden like everyone
else on here. Mine is not very good even a pot plants die on me. I love Devon
because I liked cute nic nacs and loved the shops going with mum and dad late
in the evening looking round shops that reminded me of Aladdin s caves I used
to come home with everything made of shells. It was magical to me. Am I older than you
being born 1939 mind you a few years does not make much diffedrence. Those
winter days were awful I would get dreadful colds and got rubbed with mentholatum
ointment back and front and smelt awful did me good though. Well must go now
to bed you have set me off on memory road again. keep them coming take care
from SHEILA.

Nice day here, shorts and no top. Have cut back and front lawns, should have done them yesterday but couldn't be bothered. It's nice when at home all the time, you can do what you want ,when you want. and don't have to answer to anyone.

Jane your Nuts look a bit like mine !!!!

Mel I could do with your OH I have two shrub stumps that need taking out, but can't do it myself. Still waiting for Landscape son to do them.

My own sons birthday today, I left card and present at his back door last week, haven't heard a word from him, not even today to thank me. Ros said I should ring him to wish him Happy Birthday I said #### off.
Going to check with the Insurance Co. regarding the Patio door. It might be covered, and will be worth the excess. to get it working again. and the extra secutity.

Here you are Fiona!!

Sooty was originally devised by Harry Corbett (nephew of fish and chip shop chain owner Harry Ramsden [2]), who bought the puppet as a present for his son, Matthew Corbett, from a stall when he was on holiday in Blackpool in 1948. Sooty, a small yellow bear with black ears, is mute to the audience but can communicate with his operator by apparently whispering in his ear. He first appeared on screen on the BBC in 1952 on the BBC's Talent Night. This particular show came from the TV Theatre at the annual British Radio Show held on this occasion at Belle Vue, Manchester. For ten days there had been nightly heats of hopefuls in the theatre culminating in each of the winners performing live on the Saturday night variety show transmitted nationally. Harry Corbett won his heat and then, by public vote, the overall winner on the live TV show: there was only the BBC1 TV channel available at this time and Harry Corbett became instantly famous nationwide. Sooty and Harry then became regulars on the BBC children's show Saturday Special from 1952-1955.

The original bear was completely yellow, and Harry covered his ears and nose with soot so that he would show up better on black and white television - hence the puppet's name. He would later be joined by other puppet characters Sweep (a dog who communicates by a saxophone reed type squeak), Soo (a shy and sweetly spoken panda), Kipper (a cat), Butch (another dog who occasionally plays the part of a villain), Ramsbottom (a snake), 'Enry the Robot (a robot), Cousin Scampi (another bear), Miki (another cat - this time, novelly, Brazilian) and Maggie Mouse (a mouse). Following Harry Corbett's retirement, Sooty was operated by his son Matthew, and enjoyed a new wave of popularity.

Sooty's personality fluctuates between kindness, cheekiness, and downright naughtiness, very often misinterpreting things said or suggested by Harry, Matthew or Soo (possibly intentionally). He plays the xylophone and keeps a wand with which he performs magic. This is accompanied by the catchphrase "Izzy wizzy, let's get busy!" His water pistol is also an icon - Matthew usually on the end of a soaking, although even royalty have fallen foul of the water[3]. Matthew carried on Harry's tradition of ending every show with the line "Bye bye everybody, bye bye", and in Matthew's last ever episode, his final scene was a collection of him saying the immortal words over the preceding years.

In the late nineties, Matthew Corbett retired, marking the end of Sooty and Co. (based around the idea of the Sooty gang running a shop that "sells almost everything") and essentially gifted Sooty to then co-star Richard Cadell, who presented the show through another five series, at first under the name Sooty Heights, then under the name, Sooty, both set at a hotel. He was joined in these by two female co-hosts, starting with Liana Bridges from 1999-2000 who worked in Sooty and Co. in the same period he did, and then Vicki Lee Taylor from 2001–2003, who had previously worked on The Queen's Nose.

Sooty is frequently shown on the CITV Channel in the UK, usually weekdays at 3pm.

In June 2008, it was announced that Richard Cadell had bought the rights to Sooty, having been put up for sale by HIT Entertainment in October 2007. Plans for three new TV show formats are underway, with a reworking of one of Matthew Corbett's stage shows due to tour early next year.[4]

Sooty also had a one-off animated cartoon series in the mid-'90s titled Sooty's Amazing Adventures.[5] It featured Sooty, Sweep, Soo & Little Cousin Scampi living in an old theatre by the coast. It was produced by Cosgrove Hall Films (the producers of Count Duckula and DangerMouse); they gave Sweep & Scampi actual voices and kept Sooty the same, having to nod his head to say "yes" or "no" or miming what his ideas are.

For many years Sooty has featured on the charity collecting boxes for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.[1]
