My Dad too was a Radio Ham.He built his radio and spent hours and hours in the garage with it tapping away on the morse tapping thing(Not sure what the name was).I found all Dads Ham Radio things a while back and he had hundreds of little cards sent to him from people all over the world who he had been in contact with.He kept a record book and he started it back in the 1940's.
I got in touch with a local Ham Radio Group and gave all his things to them.
When he was very ill with Motor Neurone Disease he found the radio a great comfort ,because he could no longer speak and had to write everything down, and yet could communicate with others by just tapping, and they didn't know that he was ill.His last record was just 10 days before he died.

Been helping OH by holding the fence panels while he put clamps on them. They are going on top of a very old brick wall that is not very straight or level!!

Also had to move everything so he could get to the wall to drill through it to put the posts up. Probably have a strong wind and it will take the lot over, wall and all!!!!! gosh I hope not..................................................

Niggley, yes I know how old you are!!!!!!!! 6 years older than me.

Jane, I find that really interesting about your Dad being a Radio Ham. How very very sad that he died of that AWFUL illness. My stepfather started building radio bits and bobs when he was 17 in 1936; When the war broke out in the Far East he went into the Airforce as a Radio Operator and was captured at the fall of Singapore and spent time in Changi jail and on the Burma Railroad, coming back to the UK in 1946. He and my mother married in 1947 when I was 4, my father having been killed in Dec 1942 just before I was born. My earliest memories are of 'Ted' G5RP!! in what was known as his shack, tapping out morsecode and building this and that. Ted belonged to the Harwell Radio Club and was its chairman. He had cards from all over the world too, the last one being from 'Peter Island' in the Antarctic (or Arctic!!) Ted had a desperate communication from the Falkland Islands when they were actually being invaded, which suddenly shut down mid-speak so to say! talk about spooky! He was interviewed by and was duly in the local paper! A proud moment! As you say Jane, after my mlother died in 1986, Ted, who was by that time very ill with cancer found Amateur Radio a lifeline, talking to friends world wide. After Ted died in 1987 I gave all the Radio Gear to the Harwell Club, including a HUGE mast in the garden, . My daughter and son have all the radio emblems and I kept the card from Peter Island, the rest I gave to the club including his record book and various other items which they were really pleased to have.

Glad Tobby is O.K. and over the op. give him plenty of TLC and his favorite tit bits.

Jane, Still can't beleive you haven't had rain. We are going to Weldon, Sat. night for a Bar B Q so hope the weather stays fine for that. Then it can rain all it likes. !!!!

Once thought about Radio Ham. but never got round to it. I think the neighbour opposite is one, as he has a very tall arial in his back garden. that blows about when windy. Your step Dad certainly went throught it,in the fall of Singapore and Changi jail..Read some very bad reports on that B----dy place. poor sods. It's a wonder they came through it.!!!!

Did Ralph get his Hospital bed today David,???? Hope so, and that all goes well for him. We are thinking of him. Give him our regards.

The MONSTERS are around again Shirl, I bet you love it realy. Even though they eat you out of house and home. We still have some jellies, left by Lewis. Will give them to the children next door. Who, by the way threw a rugby ball over our garden, that went through the greenhouse roof. The little one called over the fence this morning to ask "Hows the greenhouse Frank" little Monster or what.LOL

Fionna, I can't understand why these computers are so expensive. I thought they would come down in price like most other electrical items. Ours is getting on a bit now, but won't be able to afford another, so hope this keeps going. It's my life line to the outside world.!!!!

I remember the coronation on tv Elizabeth. Do you remember the girl on the front with the puppet and the oxo thing that
used to be black 0 ssss and then change colour. I watched the coronation on tv sat for ages munching cocoa powder
and sugar .The cocoa came in a box and was bitter if I remember. I also used to go to the meat tin and the joint always
had a bit on the end and I used to cut it off and dunk the jelly stuff out of the tin onto my bread then felt sick before tea.
Did you have a street party we did and I remember my couson coming to it and we got a rollocking from the lady who
had done our table because everything had been counted out just right.

I remember we went to a family party and played Nelsons eye it was horrible you were blindfolded and sat on a chair
and they would get a orange and say stick your finger in Nelsons eye. Later on it was the hokey cokey round grans
back to back yard and ball in the jack. Mum always made me do the paliglide with my aunties we all stood in a line
and danced round dipping down sometimes .Someone always fell over grans coal bucket and bruised a shin .Liked
Muffin the Mule was cute I can remember that song. I had a muffin the mule puppet .

HI Jane how are you. That name is my married name the road. I have put the photo of you in my scrapbook today
along with Amanda and Chester and your daughter. I think
someone else said they wanted my e mail will have to look.

I hope Toby will be alright what is wrong with him.
Jasper had a op for eating a chicken bone from the park
and when I took him back for a check he sat and did a long
wee all over the floor it was free advice day so was packed
the lady receptionist thrust the mop at me and I felt a bit fed up. I had to clean it up with about a dozen pair of eyes
looking at me. hope you had a nice day.

I THINK rationing ended in about 1952, sweets were the last to go, again, I think. Apparently things were far more difficult on the food, heating and clothes front than during the war!! The cold winter of 1946/7 didn't help as afterwards there were awful floods. How did we all survive, would people these days?! I guess they'd have to. I don't remember a street party for the coronation, I remember being given a silver crown in a plastic box. My stepfather's father gave it to me, I had it for years but now I can't find it!! careless or what?! Yes I do remember the girl with the puppet sheila, and I remember the music for the news and the tower with radio waves coming out of it!

Annx Report 5 Aug 2010 17:52

Sheila I had a Muffin the Mule puppet too. Mine had red strings. The paint came off the knees eventually so the grey metal showed.........I wonder what happened to it?

I still have my ration book and ID card..........wish mum had kept Muffin instead. lol

I used to love the meat jelly on a crust.......yum yum. Don't cook big joints any more so don't get any now.

Glad Toby is ok Mandy....he will be pleased to see you and come home.

MIL's Diamond Wedding present arrived today and is really nice.........a lead crystal vase with a message from us engraved on it. Just the kind of thing she will like. We did a BIG shop for THE day next week and the freezer is packed with things like chicken drumsticks and sausage rolls, egg bites. We have boxes everywhere with nuts, crisps, nibbles and biscuits in. OH will be up in the loft looking for the balloon pump later.......he thinks he will go dizzy if he tries to blow them all up!! lol It is MIL's birthday the day after and she asked for gift vouchers for some (more!!) new saucepans. The kind she is getting are really, really heavy even when empty......heavier than I would get for myself and she has shaky hands and has trouble carrying a cup of tea at times, so I'm puzzled???

She is still having pain and is waiting for a second opinion and scan as she thought they treated her like an idiot at the first appointment. They gave her tablets to take to calm the bladder, but she refused to take them when she saw they were also used to treat depression!! They sent her appointment for the pain clinic which she promptly cancelled because she has convinced herself that that won't help if there is something physically wrong. OH did point out that it may have helped UNTIL she has had her scan, but she won't listen. Her doctor must be very patient!!

Oh found you AMANDA I was asking Jane if your Toby
was ok what was the problem. I did wonder how your
pool was heated and take it that it inflates. It is a shame the
weather is so bad. It looks lovely . I have nothing but a garden swing and today the squirrels were chasing round it
all four of them it was very funny They were weaving in and out of the poles it is attached to. Will go now and do tea just done chow mein and it needs putting in a decent
dish.

We have one very sleepy dog !!
He keeps wandering about i've covered the carpet with old sheets as he is still bleeding slightly.
Sheila, Toby has been Castrated and had some tiny Tumors removed from just under his tail near his bottom.
We have to take him back on the 16th to have stitches removed and for them to check him over , he has tablets to take for a few days .
Hubby says he looks two stone lighter !!!! hubby was £275 lighter when he came out !!!

MillymollyAmanda

MillymollyAmanda Report 5 Aug 2010 18:04

No Sheila ,the swimming pool does not need pumping up ,it has poles round the top and pole legs ,its 15 foot across .

Jane

Jane Report 5 Aug 2010 18:16

Mandy ,just out of interest what did Tobys tumours look like under his tail?.I ask because Chester has some crusty looking things in the same place that irritate him ,and that is why I have that spray. The vet said he thinks it is allergies. They don't bleed.

Sheila

Sheila Report 5 Aug 2010 18:22

Oh poor Toby do hope he will be ok. They know how to charge the vets how do people manage who do not have much money. We do have insurance but not been able to use it yet because the vet said its got to be over £80 pound and Jaspers last treatment was to have teeth cleaned and it came under hygiene so could not claim.
Had lost most of them its his breed I am told and it came to
seventy pound .I expect if he needs a big op or in an accident we will be glad of the insurance. I need to take Jasper to the vet he keeps licking his paws do not know what is the matter with him .
