Jane Report 2 Sep 2010 17:15

Shirl I think he was in his 50's ,don't know about any siblings.
But I have details of her birth....July 18th 1888 in Wiltshire. Her name Edith Ponting West.
Her marriage to a William Alfred Fitzgerald in ??1909( or thereabouts)
Her Death certificate Died Jan 14th 1976,Ealing London.
Fitz would love to find out the name of her parents if possible and has said if anyone would care to try and find out he would be very grateful. He is hopeless when it comes to computer things lol.

He says Ponting is a middle name not part of surname. But he has no idea where the name West comes from!!!!!!!!!!!

I am glad you will be sitting down at the computer Jane after reading that

OMG Tracy that is a whopping amount of money, how did you work that one out . Do you think This George Maxwell whatever his name was must have been loaded.
I don't know London very well but I think that Mayfair & Knightsbridge was a very fashionable area of london to live in, am I right?

Fiona Report 2 Sep 2010 20:58

Jane this George Maxwell was a Stockbroker and he had a lot of Servants
Lucky Edith to be adopted by such wealthy people this story gets more amazing as time goes on.
I wonder where Edith was living on the 1911 census?

Just looked up the 1911 census but didn't look at the image I saw that Edith Fitzgerald was 23 and living in Kensington, London

Annx Report 2 Sep 2010 21:03

I was just wondering that too about the 1911 census Fiona.

I notice that the surname PONTING is not uncommon in Wiltshire so maybe that is her original surname or her mother's surname as a middle name??
Fitz needs to get a copy of her birth cert doesn't he to see what that shows.

Jane

Mr George Mankiewicz is I think Mr George Augustus Mankiewicz . He appears to be at some sort of boarding school in 1871 census and his father and mother were James and Ada Mankiewicz . Father James was born in Prussia and was a merchant. George is also shown as a commission merchant in 1881c so I suppose that could be another name for a stockbroker in those times?
